Sleep in crew extrication drill

Saturday, July 9, 2011
-
Tonight the Johnston Fire Department sleep in crew was joined by five additional firefighters to conduct an impromptu extrication drill.  As a part of this drill we used hydraulic and electronic extrication tools to remove doors, Windows, seat belts, and other hazards that could keep a victim entangled during a vehicle accident.  These training opportunities are key to the continued skill and proficiency of our firefighters.

6-1 Scenario 2 Water Shuttle
Friday, June 3, 2011
-
During the June 1 water shuttle drill, scenario 2 provided record water shuttle flows. This article is a short description overview.

The drill ground was shaped like an upside down "Y". The leg of the Y faced the north, where Tower Ladder 3960 flowed its 2in tip. 3960 was supplied by Engine 3930, in the middle of the Y. 3930 was a relay engine pumping a discharge line into TW3960's by-pass, with 100ft of 4in straight into the aerial. 3930 also flowed its own deck gun 1-1/2in tip. 3930 received water from the supply end of the relay. The supply end of the relay had 2 "legs". The two legs were called Dump Site 1 & 2.

On the west side of the two legged base, was Engine 3730. The west side dump was called "Dump Site 1". 3730 drafted from 3 porta-tanks. 3730 pumped 2 - 300ft 4in supply lines into 3930. Additionally, 3730 supplied 1 - 100ft 4in supply line into Engine 1133. 1133 flowed its 1-3/8in tip deck gun.

On the east side of the two legged base, was Rescue Engine 3970. The east dump was called "Dump Site 2". 3970 drafted from 2 porta-tanks. 3970 pumped 1 - 300ft 5in supply line into 3930. 3970 also flowed its deck gun at 500 GPM.

Dump Sites 1 & 2 were supplied by a rotation of seven (7) tankers. These tankers were filled at Tanker Fill Sites 1 & 2. Tanker Fill Site 1 was supported by Engine-Tanker 2741 & its crew. Tanker Fill Site 2 was supported by Engine 4331. Each Tanker Fill Site established a water supply and multiple discharge lines. Multiple discharge lines were used to fill atleast two Tankers at the same time. Sometimes up to 6 discharge hoses of various sizes and couplings were available. This was necessary due to a wide range of tanker fill couplings.

Pulling Handlines - 700 feet = (4 FF's + 300 + 200 + 200 & one good song)
   3970 - Pulling 700ft
Wednesday, May 18, 2011
-
In the JFD we pull hand lines. We have varying lengths of pre-connects, ranging from 100 - 300 feet. Flat, accordion, horseshoe, & our favorite the minuteman (NO TRIPLE LOADS HERE). We at the Johnston Fire Department carry several different minuteman loads. Fast, versatile, and dependable make this a good utility load for extending lines in conjunction with a break away nozzle.

But we also train on the audibles.

The audible is when the standard play, or in this case pre-connect won't make the first down. So today, we practiced 500 foot attack lines with a 3 person crew. Also, a 700 foot attack line with a 4 person Engine Company. Yes, 700 feet of 1-3/4 hose, stretched and flowing water in under 3:30. We know its a little unorthodox, but remember our motto:

"We do it better."

Enjoy the video, Its not a perfect line pull, there are plenty of points we will continue to improve. But practice makes perfect. Stay tuned for our 800 & 900 ft 4 person pulls.

Thank You
