Welcome To The Johnston Fire Department

Where are we? The City of Johnston is in the very middle of the country. We are located just 2 miles west of the intersection of I- 80 (E/W) & I- 35 (N/S). Johnston is a thriving N.W. suburb of our states capital, Des Moines, Iowa. The Johnston Fire Department serves the City of, as well as areas of unincorporated Polk County. Our response area covers approximately fifteen (15) square miles. Home to: A population estimated to be over 12,000. The World Headquarters of Pioneer Hi-Bred International, the worlds largest producer of Corn & the Headquarters of John Deere Financial.

The Johnston Fire Department along with Grimes Fire are currently accepting applications for Paid On Call (POC’S) Firefighters / EMT’s. Applications can be printed or picked up at Johnston City Hall (6221 Merle Hay Road) or the Johnston Fire Station (6015 NW 62nd), between the hours of 8-5 Mon-Fri.

The Des Moines Fire Department Technical Rescue Team visited Johnston to discuss their equipment and how it is used. The Johnston and Grimes Fire Departments were in attendance at this drill. We would like to thank the Des Moines Fire Department for coming out.

At 1330 hours the Windsor Heights Fire Department (WHFD) requested Johnston for RIT on a residential assignment. Johnston 3930 responded. Upon arrival Johnston crews checked in with command and took their assignment as RIT. WHFD had a good knock on the fire and Johnston went back into service shortly after arriving on scene.

Mid 40 degree day in Johnston is perfect for some much needed pumping. Blue crew gave T3960 a good workout after the long Iowa winter months. Each crew member had the opportunity to operate the valves and flow water out of the waterway. Both fog and smoothbore nozzles were used during the drill.

Johnston and Grimes FD held an Ice Rescue Class on Jan 19th and 20th. With classroom the first day and hand’s on the second, in the icey water. The temperture around 4F and the wind chill of -5F everyone dressed in multiple layers.
Thanks to the quality instruction everyone kept dry, throughout the day. No cold related injuries reported. Making the class a complete success. Special Thanks to both instructors from Professional Rescue Innovation (PRI).

0800 The Johnston Fire Department was alarmed for help with an early morning extrication in Grimes. Upon arrival crews, cribbed, cut, and spread for approximately 8 minutes to free the entangled victim. Clean up was preformed and all units went back in service by 0900 hrs.

Johnston Fire Department was dispatched to the 4900 block of Piekenbrock for a residential assignment. A neighbor had called 9-1-1 and reported smoke showing from the house. When Johnston 3900 and 3930 arrived on scene there was smoke showing from the eaves. No fire. 3930’s crew pulled a 1 ¾ line and proceeded to the front door. 3900 broke windows to vent the A side. 3930 went in for an interior attack. 3930 was met by heavy smoke at the front door. Ceiling was pulled in an attempt to locate the fire, but no fire was found. 3930 crew backed out. Additional crews arrived on scene and began to assist Johnston in finding the fire. The fire was found in the basement. A 1 ¾ line and 2 ½ line was pulled to the C side of the house to began fire suppression. The fire was extinguished and overhaul began. Johnston would like to thank the following departments: Grimes, Windsor Heights, Altoona, Saylor, Clive, and Urbandale.

JFD set a record breaking 1192 calls to service after setting record last year with 1015. House 39 was called to service for 91 fire, 733 EMS, and 368 for other types of calls. Below are the unit response totals:
