Welcome To The Johnston Fire Department

Where are we? The City of Johnston is in the very middle of the country. We are located just 2 miles west of the intersection of I- 80 (E/W) & I- 35 (N/S). Johnston is a thriving N.W. suburb of our states capital, Des Moines, Iowa. The Johnston Fire Department serves the City of, as well as areas of unincorporated Polk County. Our response area covers approximately fifteen (15) square miles. Home to: A population estimated to be over 12,000. The World Headquarters of Pioneer Hi-Bred International, the worlds largest producer of Corn & the Headquarters of John Deere Financial.

The 3rd annual JFD pancake breakfast was a success. The community turned out in record numbers to show their support for the department. The JFD would like to thank all the sponsors and the community for the overwhelming support.

Special thanks to Lifeflight for coming out to Grimes FD. Both departments participated in a joint training venture on Wednesday evening. Basic ops were taught, which will assure quick patient, scene to hospital time.

The Johnston Fire and Grimes Fire Departments were dispatched to the 10000 block of Catalina Drive for a fully involved vehicle fire. Johnston 3930(E) and Grimes 3730(E) arrived on scene to a fully involved vehicle fire about 5 feet from the home with siding beginning to melt. An 1 3/4 line from both units were used to knock the fire and provide heat protection from the siding that had begun to melt. Both departments returned to service within the hour.

The metro area is preparing for some serious flooding. The pictures speak a 1000 words. With the emergency overflow spillway about 3 feet from going over, the Army Corps of Engineers closed the roads leading into the Saylorville Dam area late on 06-09-08. The current water level is 882 feet and expected to rise over night. All over the metro, crews are preparing for a long few days of community service work.

The Johnston and Grimes Fire Departments conducted a hands-on hazmat refresher drill. The two part drill consisted of lecture and hands-on decontainment set-up. The skills portion broke the monotony of the normal hazmat refresher training courses. Both departments would like to give a special thanks to the instructors who were full of knowledge and made it a fun two days.

To practice large area search and rescue, Johnston members used the smoke machine to smoke out the bay. Members of the department donned in Full PPE performed an extensive search and rescue using various tools and equipment.

Johnston Ladder drill consisted of raising, lowering, and placing ladders. It was a good review.
